Definition
A drug that activates the receptor for glucagon-like peptide-1, a gut hormone released after eating that increases insulin, slows stomach emptying and reduces appetite. Semaglutide and liraglutide are GLP-1 receptor agonists; tirzepatide adds GIP; retatrutide adds GIP and glucagon. As a class they produce the largest weight loss ever seen with a medicine.
