Does Epitalon help with lifespan / mortality?

D
Grade Dno human evidenceUncontrolled, single group · effect size: not measurable
Short answerNo human evidence. As of 2 September 2026, only uncontrolled, single group exist for Epitalon for lifespan / mortality. A 12–15-year observational follow-up of elderly patients from one institute reported lower mortality with Epithalamin (the extract) plus thymus extract. No randomisation, no blinding, and not the synthetic peptide.

What the studies show

A 12–15-year observational follow-up of elderly patients from one institute reported lower mortality with Epithalamin (the extract) plus thymus extract. No randomisation, no blinding, and not the synthetic peptide.

Animal studies, cell studies, or anecdotes only. This is where almost every viral peptide sits. Promising and proven are different words for a reason.

In context

Epitalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed in St Petersburg in the 1980s and promoted for longevity on the basis of telomerase activation in cell culture and lifespan effects in mice. The human evidence comes from one research group, is uncontrolled, and much of it used Epithalamin — a pineal-gland extract — rather than the synthetic peptide sold under the name. It is not approved anywhere.

Epitalon is not approved. Legal status differs by country — see the regulation section or the jurisdiction pages.

Questions

Is Epitalon proven to help with lifespan / mortality?
No. There is no human evidence for it (Uncontrolled, single group); the claim rests on animal or cell studies and LYO grades it D.
What studies are behind the grade?
A 12–15-year observational follow-up of elderly patients from one institute reported lower mortality with Epithalamin (the extract) plus thymus extract. No randomisation, no blinding, and not the synthetic peptide.
Is Epitalon approved for this?
No. Epitalon is not approved; it is not an approved medicine for any indication in the jurisdictions LYO covers.
