Definition
Randomised controlled trial. Participants are assigned by chance to the compound or to a comparator (usually placebo), so that any difference at the end can be attributed to the compound rather than to who chose to take it. It is the only study design that can show a compound caused an effect. LYO's grades A and B require them; grades C and D are what you get without them.
